Women with Disabilities Victoria recently ran its inaugural peer mentoring program facilitated by our Project officer for Peer mentoring and Support, Lauren Hayes. Lauren brought together 9 women from a range of diverse backgrounds interested in developing their skills in systemic advocacy and representation. The women spent 3 hours each week for 6 weeks learning about and discussing topics including human rights, effective advocacy, public speaking and presentation skills, and the current priority areas for Women with Disabilities Victoria. Presenters involved throughout the program included project worker Rebecca Feldman from the Youth Disability Advocacy Service, Naomi Chaney, director of Grit Media, Nicky Barry from Health Issues Centre, actor Kate Hood, and singer songwriter Heidi Everett.
Here are some quotes about the program from participants. Names have been changed to respect privacy and confidentiality.
Renee: I've learned to work on my patience and to hold back and to just let it be. We're all the same but different. We all want to advocate and create change but we all do it differently as individuals. I've learned that we need to give in order to get backand that if we want to achieve change it's about what you can offer and how you can collaborate.
Debbie: I'm on this path but I've been a bit lost. I felt like I was a solo singer but now I feel like I've got a choir.
Emily: Other women with disabilities are in the same situation as myself and have the same struggles. I've also learned I need to think for myself and speak up for myself. Everyone here has supported one another and listened to one another. We are all accepting each other for who we are.
